One of the best things I remember as a kid was going to my grandmother's house and having my grandfather take me out to the bakery around the block to buy goodies for the coffee hour. My favorite thing was these huge meringues they used to sell and since then I've been a fan of them.
Wherever I go if I see them on any menu, displayed on a window or nicely packed on a shelf I have to buy them. I love them when they're crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside creating a great contrast in textures.
The recipes are always quite simple and include just a few ingredients: egg whites, fine sugar, cream of tartar and a good mixer. They have several interpretations where you can add colors {not a big fan of food coloring myself}, nuts and extracts to give them a little pizzazz...
One of my favorite incarnations of this sweet treat is the Pavlova. Named after the famous ballerina, Anna Pavlova, this pie like dessert features a meringue crust, a cream filling and some sort of topping being berries the most commonly used... This is the best combination of a lot of goodness.
Have a great and airy day!
Gorgeous! x
ReplyDeleteYum! I grew up eating meringue mushrooms - my mom has an old recipe from the 80s. They are fun to make, I make a huge mess but they are so cute in the end. :)
